His name was still on the door, but boxes were packed around his desk. Tommy Smith, 60, announced his retirement June 13, and he said Tuesday it was time to leave on a high note. Baseball coach Joe Scheuermann will take the reins for Smith, effective July 1.
Smith arrived at Delgado in 1981 as an assistant basketball and baseball coach under the program’s founder, Louis “Rags” Scheuermann, the father of Joe Scheuermann. Smith succeeded the elder Scheuermann as athletic director in 1986 and has held the position ever since, along with men’s basketball coach since 1990.
Tommy Smith ’71 was a member of the 1969-1970 Undefeated District, State and National Champion Basketball team and a member of the 1970-1971 District and State Champion Basketball team.
