Wallis Named to Clarion Herald’s Elite Boys’ Basketball Team

Senior guard Venjie Wallis has been named to the 2015 Clarion Herald’s Elite Boys’ Basketball Team.  Wallis helped lead the Crusaders to a 23-9 overall record.  The Crusaders fell 47-46 in the second round of the LHSAA playoffs to West Jefferson after defeating Comeaux 60-40 in the playoff opener. A Little Too Late

Ninth-seeded Brother Martin, 23-9, finished its season on Tuesday night in a nail biting 47-46 loss to West Jefferson. At the start of the game, the teams were neck and neck, but by halftime, the Crusaders found themselves trailing by four points. The Buccaneers scored 14 points in the third quarter to open up the game, but the Crusaders came close as they chipped away at the lead in the final eight minutes. Basketball Stuffs Comeaux

Heavy defensive pressure seemed to be the deciding factor in the 60-40 Crusader (23-8) win over Comeaux on Friday night. Brother Martin’s defense dominated from the opening tip, forcing Comeaux into seven turnovers in the first quarter. Basketball Has Successful Break

Over the break, the Brother Martin basketball team went on a 3-0 streak to finish the regular season at 22-8 and 7-3 in district. Forward Bruce Jordan-Swilling came through on the road in a Catholic League matchup against Rummel. With just seconds remaining, Jordan-Swilling rebounded the missed shot opportunity by teammate Irv Smith and scored a layup just before the clock hit 0:00 for a 47-45 victory in overtime. Jabbar Singleton ’13: Hardwood over Gridiron

Jabbar Singleton ’13 has recently been featured in an article in the Oracle, the Student News Media at Oral Roberts University. As a two sport athlete at Brother Martin, Jabbar drew interest from scouts and coaches during his senior year.  Singleton ran for 1,422 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns his senior year and was named to the All-District 9-5A team. The Basketball Program consists of five levels of competition: seventh grade, eighth grade, ninth grade, junior varsity, and varsity.

Varsity and junior varsity basketball begins with conditioning and weight training in the fall.  The official beginning of practice is determined by LHSAA regulations. Currently, that is the first Monday in October.  Tryouts for all levels take place in November. Varsity and junior varsity seasons begin in late November and run through late February.  Team members are expected to attend all practices/games during the holiday seasons.  9th, 8th, 7th grade teams begin in late November.  Spring practice for varsity and junior varsity takes place in May.  Summer League/Team Camps run from the end of May through the month of June.

Team selections (all levels) are made through a tryout process.
