Shannon Marks '85 River Pilot
Last week I had an unique opportunity. Shannon Marks '85, a river pilot, invited me to take a short trip upriver aboard an 890 ft. freighter. We left port in a crewboat in the 9th Ward.  As we approached the ship, which was moving upriver, I asked Shannon how we were getting onto the ship.  He explained that they were going to drop a 20 ft. rope ladder down to us and we would climb up to the gang plank. He half jokingly advised me to swim away from the ship if I slipped and fell into the river. I gave Shannon a good laugh as I nervously climbed the ladder.  (I was slightly nervous.)

Once aboard, we joined the captain on the bridge of the ship, six stories above the river. Shannon took over as pilot and guided us around the crescent toward uptown.  The view was awesome and I took some great pictures of Chalmette Battlefield, St. Louis Cathedral, Canal St. and the barge wreckage.

We docked at the Nashville St. wharf.  To hear and see Shannon direct the three tugs and the ship into the dock was incredible.  He piloted the nearly 900 ft. vessel (nearly two city blocks long) flush against the wharf.  I now have a new appreciation of "ships on the river" after the experience.

I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Nick Revon Story
Nick Revon, one of the greatest athletes in Louisiana history, died last week. Nick Revon earned All-State recognition in the seventh through ninth grades, the fact that his play at St. Aloysius once warranted a personal workout before Kentucky basketball coaching legend Adolph Rupp, the fact that he was drafted by the NBA and the fact that he coached highly successful teams on two stops in high school at St. Aloysius and East Jefferson all contributed to his Hall of Fame credentials. Despite his 5-foot-9 stature, Revon always considered himself blessed with jumping ability -- vertically and horizontally. He could leap and touch a 10-foot high basketball rim and he could long jump 23 feet, 6 inches. Many stories have been writen about him, here are two.
