This is probably the oldest picture of a Crusader athletic team. It is the 1917 basketball squad coached by Brother Bonaventure, S.C., who served at 1137 Esplanade Avenue until the school closed at the end of the 1968-9 school year. Presumably the stripe on the jerseys was purple with the "A" in gold. They certainly had well-dressed managers in those days, didn't they?

From the 1933 Panther: "For the second consecutive year St. Aloysius High will be represented in the City Prep School Tennis Tournament. … Among the veterans on the tennis team of 1932 who have returned are: Francis Reso, Richard Mestayer, and Frank Schaefer. With these players as a nucleus the Aloysius team should prove a dangerous contender in the Championship matches. Frank Schaefer has been elected to captain the aggregation of netmen." [No indication of how they did in the tournament.]

This is the pep rally before the 1982 gridiron clash with Holy Cross. You may recognize a current Brother Martin teacher in the lower right of the photo.

The spirit carried over to the game as the Crusaders won 16-6 to dash the Tigers' playoff hopes.

Drew Sumich runs a relay leg in a 1992 track meet. That year's team finished third in District under Head Coach Chubby Marks and assistants Mike Materne, Tony Melito, Mike Misita, and Dennis Panepinto.
