Dr. Brian M. Barkemeyer, a graduate of Brother Martin High School, Louisiana State University and Louisiana State University School of Medicine, earned a B.S. in Zoology in 1983 and his medical degree in 1987. He was a resident in pediatrics at LSU Medical Center from 1987-1990 and was a fellow in neonatal-perinatal medicine at LSU Medical Center from 1990-1993, training at Charity Hospital, Children’s Hospital, and Tulane Medical Center.
Brian is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in General Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
Professionally he is currently a fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics and member of the Section on Perinatal Pediatrics, a member of Southern Society for Pediatric Research, a member of the Catholic Physicians Guild, the Louisiana Maternal Child Health Coalition, the Louisiana State Medical Society and the Orleans Parish Medical Society.
Brian's awards and academic accomplishments are many and diverse. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1975 and was named to the National Honor Society in 1976. Brian was the 1979 class valedictorian for Brother Martin High School, the Lambert Award recipient and was named a Golden Crusader. He was also a National Merit Finalist and received a National Honor Society Scholarship.
At LSU, Brian played on the LSU Varsity Baseball team and was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Honor Society, Mu Sigma Rho Honor Society, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He received the Pediatric Award from his medical school graduation class and was recognized as Outstanding Pediatric Intern among his peers.
Dr. Barkemeyer is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at LSU Health Sciences Center and head of the Division of Neonatology, serving on the medical staffs at Children's Hospital, University Hospital, East Jefferson General Hospital, Touro Infirmary, and several other area hospitals. He has served as medical director for the Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit since 1997. He has been extensively involved in the education of medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians throughout his career and has received multiple honors for his academic work.
Brian and his wife, Michelle (nee Hassenboehler), are the parents of five children, Elise Michelle, Amanda Katherine, Ellen Elizabeth, Anna Claire and Michael Joseph.
