BATON ROUGE SOCIAL

SPIN FOR A CAUSE

Alumni and friends of Brother Martin took a “spin for a cause” in August at The Carousel Bar in The Hotel Monteleone.  Patrons socialized in the rotating bar and a portion of the profits from the evening was donated back to Brother Martin High School.

CHAPEL CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

Construction on our chapel started Tuesday, August 17, as crews began to drive pilings on the site, which is located behind the Meyer Building on the north end of campus. The chapel continues a tradition of building and improving the campus at Brother Martin that began with the Ridgley Center. The chapel was designed by Waggonner & Ball Architects and is being built by Ryan Gootee General Contractors. It is projected to be completed before the end of June 2011 and be in use for the opening of the 2011-12 school year.

ALUMNI BASEBALL TRIP

The 2010 Alumni Baseball trip traveled to Chicago. The group attended a White Sox game at US Cellular Field and a Cubs game at Wrigley Field.

Robert Bennett ’78 hosted a baseball outing. Tampa alumni and guests enjoyed a game versus Cleveland, food and drinks in a suite and a concert after the game. Tommy Mitchell ’79 updated the group.

Claude Sordelet '83 hosted a crawfish boil for the South Florida Chapter. Claude Sordelet, Jr. '60 SA, of Metairie, flew down to join his son and other S. FL alumni. This is the second year that Claude has hosted the boil.

The St. Aloysius Class of 1950 celebrated their 60-year reunion at the Plus 50 Gala. Bob Abadie, Luke Ghergich, Gary Hymel, Joe McAdam and Bob Ponti served on the committee.

HOUSTON CHAPTER
Karen and Chuck Stall ’76 hosted the Houston Chapter Crawfish Boil on June 13th. Tim Taylor ’97, Tim Taylor ’72, Mike Ligon ’88 and Greg Clement ’92 assisted with the event.  Tommy Mitchell ’79 served as school representative.

FISHING RODEO
The 2010 Brother Martin Fishing Rodeo was held at Breakwater Park at West End.  The new venue, a generous stage donation from Dolph Federico ’86, owner of Pelican Graphics & Events, a generous donation of tents and chairs from Mike Cascio ’96 and Fleur de Lis Event Rental and the hard work of the committee contributed to a successful event.

The St. Aloysius and Cor Jesu classes of 1960 joined for a weekend reunion. Alumni gathered at Gordon-Biersch on Poydras St. on Friday for a stag event. AL BRIEDE GOLD CUP RACE
The 43rd Annual Al Briede Gold Cup Race was hosted this weekend by the Brother Martin Alumni Office. Mr. Briede '40, is the 1982 Alumnus of the Year. This year the race was won by Matt Manning in a time of 15:30 for 3 miles.

Coach Bonis invited alumni football players and former coaches back to school to speak to the team as part of their spring workouts.  Chad LaRose '90, Coach Chubby Marks '54, Kenny Bordelon '72, Chance Miller '88, Pat Stant '87, Coach Al Pontiff and Rod West '86 spoke to the team about the tradition of Brother Martin football.

CLASSES GATHER AT SEAFOOD DINNER
The Alumni Seafood Dinner has become another way for class groups to reunite.  Many classes gather for "mini" reunions at annual dinner.  Johnny's Seafood boiled crawfish, Brother Martin Food Service fried seafood and faculty and staff volunteers served food and drinks.  Members of the Alumni Board of Directors worked registration and ran the

raffle and 50/50 and members of the Class of '97 manned a drink station.

DALLAS CHAPTER SOCIAL
Michael Villa ’96 and Meadows, Collier, Reed, Cousins, & Blau, L.L.P. Attorneys at Law sponsored a Dallas Chapter Social in April at Dodie’s New Orleans Café.  Dallas alumni and guests enjoyed a complimentary buffet and open bar.  Tommy Mitchell ’79 updated the group on campus activities.

The Crimson & Gold Business Network along with the Alumni Association hosted the annual Senior Lunch in the Terrace.  Seniors were treated to Corky's and gifts as members of the Alumni Board of Directors congratulated them on their hard work and spoke about their relationship with the school after they graduate.  Alumni with sons in the senior class, faculty and staff attended and Ladies of the

Shield volunteers assisted with the event.

2010 PRESIDENT’S DINNER
The 4th annual President’s Dinner at Commander’s Palace provided special friends a unique opportunity to share in the ministry of the Brothers and contribute to the mission of our school.  Mr. Devlin shared his vision and plans for the future of Brother Martin High School.  He announced that construction is set to begin on the new chapel in August.   P. ALUMNI DAY OF REFLECTION
Bro. Francis David, S.C., led the 14th Alumni Day of Reflection.  The theme for the day was “Lent: A Time of Fasting and Feasting”.  The day provided a unique opportunity to celebrate with classmates and fellow alumni.   Randy Oddo '62 SA serves as chairman of the Retreat Committee that includes Bob Burns '62 SA,  Tony Melito '76 and Wayne Wellmeier '86. group.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR
David R. Gallo ’77 received the Senator Allen J. Ellender Award at the 39th annual Alumnus of the Year Mass and Brunch. The event was held at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside this past Sunday. David was presented the award by Brother Martin High School president Mr. John Devlin and Chairman of the Board of Directors Judge Bob Burns SA ’62.

David was accompanied by his wife, Jeanne, and their children, Victoria, Augie ’05 and David ’09.  David is the President and CEO of Gallo Mechanical, L.L.C. and GMC Services, L.L.C.  Under his direction, Gallo Mechanical has been instrumental in the reconstruction process following Hurricane Katrina including the restoration of Brother Martin High School, the Louisiana Superdome and many Archdiocesan schools.

LAFAYETTE CHAPTER
Kevin Poirrier '94 hosted our basketball team and alumni for dinner before our State Basketball semi-fianl game.  The Crusaders defeated Hammond 68-66 to advance to the State Championship game.

 

ATLANTA CHAPTER SOCIAL

Basketball lettermen reunited at the Brother Martin vs. Shaw game.  After the Crusader victory a reception was held at Lakeview Harbor.  The 1950, 1960, 1970 and 2005 State Championship teams were recognized on their championship anniversaries.

SOCIETY OF 1869
Members of the Society of 1869 joined the Brother Martin Community on Friday, January 22nd for a school mass. The Society of 1869 is comprised of alumni, friends, and supporters who have made a Planned Gift to our school. A reception was held for them after mass in the Alumni & Development Office.

 

ALUMNI PRE-GAME PARTY
Sean Bruno '89, Rod Teamer '80 and Vance Vaucresson ’87 hosted a party before the Brother Martin/St. Augustine basketball game.  They invited alumni to “reconnect fellowship and hang out before the big game and find out what's new at Brother Martin!”  The party was at Bruno & Tervalon Accounting Firm.

Alumni from the Carolinas and Virginia attended the Saints game in Charlotte.  President John Devlin joined the group and braved cold temperatures to cheer on the Saints.

 

WRESTLING REUNION
Alumni wrestlers, family and friends reunited at the Culotta Tournament in December.  After the tournament a reception was held at Lakeview Harbor where the 1985 and 2000 State Championship teams were recognized on their respective anniversaries.

One of the newest traditions at Brother Martin High School is the presentation of the Crimson Shield Award to members of the senior class judged by the faculty and administration to have displayed specific exemplary personal qualities.
The Alumni Association honored former recipients of the Crimson Shield at social and a jambalaya dinner at Ernst Cafe.

Members of the Triangle Chapter gathered in Raliegh, NC to watch the Saints Monday night victory over the Patriots.  Also, John Devlin and Bill Engel '66 SA attended the event.

 

1989 FOOTBALL REUNION
Members of the 1989 State finalist football team reunited to watch a replay of their 59-56 OT victory over Ruston in the 1989 state semi-finals.  Coaches Al Pontiff, Chubby Marks and Tony Melito '76 attended the reunion.

CAREER DAY
Over 50 alumni returned to campus for Career Day.  Alumni gave presentations in careers ranging from accounting to veterinary medicine. Sophomores, juniors and seniors attended four professional presentations of their choosing, while the 8th and 9th graders attended special presentations on Louisiana coastal restoration, the history of Brother Martin High School and received tips on how to succeed academically.

Ray Brandt SA '65 addressed the Crimson & Gold Business Network (CGBN) at the Fall Social.  He spoke about keys to success in business and in life, the local economy and answered questions from fellow alumni.

Alumni and friends celebrated Homecoming 2009.  Pre-game festivities included pizza, jambalaya prepared by Dane Clement, face-painting and performances by our cheerleaders and presentation of the court.  Pat Barbaro '85 provided music.  Alumni football lettermen and alumni cheerleaders joined the party as part of their reunions.

Alumni, family and friends attended the Alumni Band Reunion & Performance.  Alumni rehearsed, ate pizza while watching the LSU game on TV in The Mall, then headed over to the game.  The Alumni Band entertained the crowd during the Brother Martin vs. Helen Cox game at Hoss Metmsas Stadium.  The Crusaders won 45-14.

NJROTC REUNION
NJROTC Alumni reunited at the Brother Martin vs. O. Perry Walker football game.  After the Crusaders victory, Maj. Amick joined alumni and friends at Lakeview Harbor for a reception.

SLIDELL CHAPTER
The Alumni Association hosted a pre-game party for our Slidell Chapter at Speckled T's.  Over 60 alumni, family and friends were treated to a dinner buffet, drinks and raffle prizes.  John Devlin, Barry Hebert '74, Mike Lemmon and Kenny Spellman '84 updated the group on campus activities.  The group then headed over to the game and cheered the Crusaders to a victory over Northshore 32-7.

Keynote speaker, Brother Francis David, S.C., shared his thoughts on prayer and spirituality with alumni, parents, and supporters at the 5th annual Brother Martin Prayer Breakfast. PACIFIC NORTHWEST CHAPTER
The PNW Chapter Dinner turned into an international reunion as alumni from around the world attended dinner in Seattle.  Alumni from New York, Memphis, Montana, Oregon, California, Washington, Louisiana and Utah were there as well as Wayne Marks '64 SA, who came in from Makou, China to reunite with his brothers Gary '62 SA, Dale and Glynn.  Two alumni from Utah, Louis

Catalanotto '65 SA and Kenneth Thompson '65 SA, and their wives, just happened to be in the same restaurant having dinner and joined the party.  The tailgate party went mobile in order to find the best spot to meet.  Hunter Ferguson '96 and some generous Washington fans provided a great venue.

ARCHBISHOP OF NEW ORLEANS
Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond ’67 CJ has been appointed Archbishop of New Orleans by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.  In becoming the 14th Archbishop of New Orleans, Archbishop-designate Aymond will become the first native-born New Orleans priest to hold that position. His installation Mass is scheduled for Thursday, August 20, 2009, at 2 p.m. at St. Louis Cathedral.

 


CLASS OF 2004 REUNION
The Brother Martin Class of '04 celebrated their 5-year reunion in The Terrace.  Members of the administration and faculty welcomed the young alumni back to campus.

Brother Martin Fishing Rodeo
The 10th annual Brother Martin Fishing Rodeo was held at Laketown at the Kenner launch.  Attendees enjoyed great weather, plenty of food, thanks to the Class of '73 Cooking Team, music by Eddie Gonzales '77, kids games and "big fish".  David Pecot '76 and Nick Macaluso '85 co-chaired the committee of 24.  A special thanks to the Brother Martin Cheerleaders and the

numerous volunteers who assisted with the event.

The sixth annual Plus 50 Gala was held at Brother Martin High School.  Father Paul Hart '70 celebrated Mass followed by cocktails and dinner.  The Plus 50 committee is Ken Leithman ’47, Chairman, George Wax ’45, Lou Bravo ‘48, Roy Hoffman ’46, Mike McAdam ’53, Emery Dyer ‘56, Floyd Gegenhiemer ’48, Joe Bischone ’57 SA and Bro. The Cor Jesu Class of 1959 celebrated their 50th anniversary with a "grads only" party in The Bro. SEAFOOD DINNER
The annual Seafood Dinner was held on Friday, May 1st, in The Mall.  Johnny's Seafood boiled 2300 lbs. of crawfish, Mrs. Tina LaBeaud and Food Services prepared and served fried fish, shrimp, hush puppies and fries and faculty, staff and alumni volunteers welcomed attendees and served the food and beverages.

Michele and Claude Sordelet '83 hosted a South Florida Chapter crawfish boil at their West Palm Beach home.  Alumni and their families enjoyed crawfish and swimming and Development Director Tommy Mitchell '79 updated the group on campus activities and alumni events.

The Alumni Association hosted a Wine & Cheese on campus on April 27th.  Alumni and guests were treated to light refreshments and Greg Rando '77, Brother Martin Principal, updated the group on campus information and activities. Faculty and staff offered tours of the facilities and answered questions.

Baseball Lettermen from St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu and Brother Martin reunited after the Crusaders defeated Chalmette 8-0.  The 1984 State Championship team was recognized on their 25th anniversary.

The Alumni Association hosted the annual Senior Lunch in the Terrace.  Ladies of the Shield volunteers assisted with the day.  Alumni congratulated the seniors on their hard work and listed the many opportunities available to them to stay connected to our school.

Brother Martin Tennis Tournament
The 2009 Brother Martin Tennis tournament was held on Friday, March 27th, at the University Tennis Center at U.N.O.  Over 130 participants made this the largest tournament to date.  The weather couldn't dampen the Crusader spirit as players and guest were treated to food, drinks, complimentary massages and a parade of prizes.  
Committee members are Jeanne Gallo, Shiela Heidingsfelder, Debbie Teachworth, Missy Forschler, Tracy Knoepfler, Shannon Bell, Lisa Lozes, Laurie Nodier, Kerri Becker, Mary Kay Casadaban, Ron McDonald ’82 & Lee Stall ’82.

Glaviano '73 Named Alumnus of the Year
David M. Glaviano ’73 received the Senator Allen J. Ellender Award at the 39th annual Alumnus of the Year Mass and Brunch.  The event was held at the Sheraton on Canal Street.  David was presented the award by Brother Martin High School President Mr. John Devlin and Chairman of the Board of Directors Judge Bob Burns ’62 SA.

CGBN MEETING
Mr. Tom Benson ’44, owner of the New Orleans Saints, Fox affiliate WVUE-TV Channel 8 and Benson Automotives, spoke to the Crimson & Gold Business Network at the Spring Social on Monday, March 16th, in the Bro. Mark Thornton Terrace.  Over 150 alumni attended the event, swapped cards and shared stories.

Mr. Benson spoke about the economy, the Saints, his connections to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and Brother Martin and the importance of community service.  He was accompanied by his wife, the former Gayle Marie LaJaunie.
 
Rod West ’86, President and CEO of Entergy New Orleans, served as emcee.  Saints personnel Jay Romig ’72, Operations, and Nick Karl ’98, Director of Community Affairs, assisted with the evening.
 
Also in attendance were Brother Martin President John Devlin, Principal Greg Rando ’77, former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Pascal Calogero ’49 and Archbishop of Baton Rouge, Most Reverend Robert Muench.
